The relationships between the earnings and portfolios of the commercial banks of Singapore, the Philippines, and Tailand in 1975-76 are examined. The hypothesis that variations in the portfolio composition of banks determine variations in their net earnings accounted for observed trends in commercial banking at the 0.01 level of significance.
