Guinea - Coastal Marine and Biodiversity Management Project : social and environmental assessment : Republique de Guinee - Programme Integree de Gestion des Ressources Naturelles (PGRN) : evaluation environnementale et sociale (EES) (Французский)

This social and environmental assessment for the Guinea Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Management Project assesses likely negative environmental impacts and proposes measures to mitigate them. Anticipated among the environmental risks are the surrounding populations' restricted access to natural resources (mitigated by assigning concessions that regulate usage, and installing a co-management system); conflicts of interest arising from the population's lack of awareness of sustainable land management principles (mitigated by an information campaign led by local authorities and local coordination); no borders for protective areas and incursions (mitigated by clearly delimiting borders, informing communities, and enforcing control ); illegal hunting (mitigated by information dissemination and enforcement); lack of alternatives to accessing bush meat (mitigated by promoting animal husbandry of game and small ruminants); limited access to land and conflict over land use due to land set aside according to customary law and many competing users (mitigated by local coordination and conflict resolution mechanisms); and odors, risk of disease spread, and water pollution -- and a resulting decrease in biodiversity, from the use of chemical fertilizers and herbicides (mitigated by composting organic waste from cowsheds and increasing its value as a natural fertilizer, and pre-treating waste). To offset the risks of diseases linked to livestock and unhygienic conditions, water hole pollution, soil compaction, and unsafe storage of animal medicines and food stocks, build animal lodging according to standard, certify the sanitary condition of the animals, and ensure the provision of sufficient supplies but avoid prolonged food storage. Avoid environmental degradation from solid and liquid waste from other activities by ecological management including reforestation, promoting alternative cooking and seasoning/smoking methods; and introducing production technology for palm oil and improving stoves.
